Different Styles

Roleplay Rescue’s Blog

Playing in some games, especially with new people, I am often struck by the different styles of play that are presented at the table. At these moments, the various suggestions about player taxonomy I’ve encountered through the years truly come to the fore.

I am an active player – what Jamison calls “Action Camp”, as opposed to the “Acting Camp” – and it is always stunning to me that another player might derive deep satisfaction from (say) going to buy a cloak at the town store and acting out the whole scene.

Two of the most useful books in helping to figure out HOW to roleplay

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that we all come to the table for different reasons. While I am grinding my teeth with impatience in the fantasy shop, another player might be deeply immersed in the scene. I have had to learn to practice patience…

Dragon’s Bend Game Report 18

Grumpy Wizard

Cullen, Atticus, Ozric, Quintus go back to the second level of Zeleska’s Hypogeum

  • The party snuck through the ruins on their way to the hypogeum. Cullen noticed a pile of rocks moving. It was some sort of earth elemental creature, roughly in the shape of a weasel with tufts of grass and weeds growing on its back and head. The party avoided it.
  • The party enter the 2nd level and enter the main room full of rotting hyena-man corpses. They notice that they appear to have been gnawed on.
  • The party starts exploring the side passages.
  • The party comes to a heavy metal door that is locked. They are unable to open it without making a lot of noise and taking a lot of time. They’ll come back to it later.
  • They continue on and encounter a ghoul. Atticus uses the magical trinket to drive it back. Cullen and Quintus…

PlayStation 5 on List of Top Brands in North America

The Boss Rush Network

If you were wondering how well the PlayStation 5 has been doing for Sony this past year, this latest report might answer some serious questions for you.

Business consultancy firm Prophet released their findings recently on the Top Brands in North America and the PlayStation 5 landed in the top ten brands presently in the United States. PlayStation staked its claim at the seventh spot, beating out Fitbit, TED, and USAA, but coming in below Android and Instant Pot. Apple landed at number one, followed by Peloton, Spotify, and Bose.

On Prophet’s website, the company had this to say about PlayStation’s placement in the ranking:

This is PS5’s moment. The new console keeps smashing sales records, proving that nothing can shake its hold on gamers’ love. And it makes sure familiar names, like Spider-Man and Madden, continue to be part of the family.”

The PlayStation 5 has been smashing…

Enad Global 7 Posts Strong Q4 2021 Results with High Hopes for MTGO

The Ancient Gaming Noob

Enad Global 7 posted their Q4 2021 and overall 2021 financial results this week.

Enad Global 7

As reported elsewhere, it was a good quarter for the company, with revenue up significantly.

While services made a huge leap in revenue, with the split between services and games being 60/40 in Q4 2021, the whole revenue stack for Q4 2021 dwarfs what it was for Q4 2020 when EG7 was in the process of acquiring Daybreak.

EG7 Q4 2021 slide 8

That said, while Daybreak remains the dominant part of EG7’s game segment, and grew slightly in Q4, I do wonder why it didn’t grow more.

Q3 vs Q4 Games Revenue

Those values are in Swedish Krona, but it is close enough to equal to the US Dollar at the moment as to make no difference for a chart.  Q4 saw Daybreak launch three expansions, with Lord of the Rings Online

Pyramid of the Prince in Silver

Dyson's Dodecahedron

Pyramid of the Prince in Silver
Pyramid of the Prince in Silver (300 dpi promo)

This stepped pyramid has no ground-level access, and in the ages since it was built no one has maintained the wooden stairs that used to lead to the entrances into the top tier. The stairs have rotted or burned away, leaving a sheer 15 foot climb from tier to tier. The doors at the top are stone with primitive rope locks inside them – one set has been worked until the rotten rope snapped, making access possible from the south face (although the doors are closed again, so this isn’t immediately obvious until they are pushed on).

Dedicated to the “Prince in Silver”, a warlord from a distant land who ruled this state eight hundred years ago, the pyramid consists of three tiers internally as well – but the second tier is only…

Prep To Play

Roleplay Rescue’s Blog

As many readers and listeners will know, I have a diagnosis for social anxiety. On the surface, it might seem a little odd that a person with anxieties around social interaction would record a podcast and run games for groups of people both online and face-to-face. Why would a socially anxious person become a teacher?

Well, let’s begin with this: when I am in the moment of teaching, gaming, or recording there is no anxiety.

The action, of beginning and working through the process, is how I have learned to manage the anxieties that I experience. That the cure for the fear is to focus on the process and action rather than the outcomes or people’s opinions.

Today, I am playing in a game. Over the past few months, I have evolved a process for preparing myself to play and then actually turning up to do the playing. Maybe it’ll…

The Arcane Sinkhole

Dyson's Dodecahedron

Arcane Sinkhole
Arcane Sinkhole (300 dpi promotional)

Arcane waters have created a sinkhole above this cavern – one that has nearly consumed the ruins of an old homestead beside it. The old well at the homestead goes down to the arcane waters directly, but it is probably safer / wiser to head down using the stone stairs that seem to have formed of their own accord around the sinkhole that then lead into a damp cavern beneath.

Arcane Sinkhole
Arcane Sinkhole (1200 dpi)

The floor of the main sinkhole is scattered with debris from its formation, and narrow steps lead down from there into the twisting caverns beneath, joining to the cavern reached by the stairs (although the stairs aren’t that great either – a few steps near the bottom are missing). The lowest sections of the caverns are flooded with waters tainted by the energies here. Those drinking deeply from these waters roll…

Trollopulous Reloaded Session 16: The Great Drow Panty Raid

Jeffro's Space Gaming Blog

I showed up to the session 45 minutes late and it didn’t matter because the guys were (as usual) still talking about the entire campaign map and all the things we could do. This session is late at night for some of us, so we tend to press for simple out and back raids now.

We opted for the Ragnar group which included an assassin, a magic-user, a druid, a ranger/cleric, and a ranger. I egged people on to try to take out a fire giant, but cooler heads prevailed, and I was talked back down into settling for taking out some ogres.

One thing that was suggested was that if we just moved forward in time a bit, some other character would have time to train or something. The Trollopulous veterans all harumphed this down. #NotAtMyTable! (Or in this case, #NotAtMyDMsTable.)

Heading into the mountain terrain, the DM noted…
