Today marks the 31st anniversary of the founding of id Software, the game developer from Texas who would go on to create massively important games, such as Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake. id Software is largely known for ushering in the era of the first-person shooter with Wolfenstein 3D; commonly considered to be the first true FPS game. Their latest game, Doom Eternal, was released in 2020 to generally positive reviews, averaging a score of 85 on Metacritic across all launch platforms.
There is no question that the impact of id Software’s games can be felt across the gaming industry, even to this day. Halo Infinite, the sixth main entry in the long-standing Xbox franchise, owes a lot of its success to the groundwork laid by the FPS games that came before it, particularly those from id Software.
